The former
U.S. Naval Ammunition Support Detachment
(NASD) takes up the western side of Vieques
Island. On April 30, 2001, the U.S. Navy
transferred about 4,000 acres of NASD to the
Municipality of Vieques, 3,100 acres to the
U.S. Department of the Interior (U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service), and 800 acres to the
Puerto Rico Conservation Trust.
As part of
the transfer agreement, the Navy has been
taking the actions needed to protect both
human health and the environment in certain
areas, which may contain hazardous
substances resulting from Navy activities in
the past. The Navy will retain easements to
these areas until the investigation and any
necessary cleanup is complete.
