SWMU 10 Waste Paint and Solvents Disposal Site

The Waste Paint and Solvents Disposal Site consists of an area of soil outside the Paint Locker, Building 4001, where waste paints and solvents were reportedly spilled; however, no evidence to confirm this has been found. SWMU 10 was in use since the mid-1970s until the closure of NASD in 2001. All remaining waste paints and solvents stored in Building 4001 were transferred to Naval Station Roosevelt Roads for proper disposal before NASD was closed.

To investigate this site, a total of 10 surface soil and 10 subsurface soil samples were collected. Groundwater at this and nearby sites is about 40 feet below the surface and the soil are clays that do not allow water to pass through easily. Samples were analyzed for organic chemicals and inorganic chemicals (metals). Only the metals (which are not associated with paint and solvent spills) were detected at levels that could make them chemicals of potential concern (COPCs). The health risk assessment found them to be within acceptable health limits for maintenance, industrial or construction workers, recreational visitors, or residents (if housing were to be built here in the future) and no ecological impacts were identified. Since no hazardous waste release from past Navy operations was found, and no human health concerns were identified, SWMU 10 was recommended for No Further Action.
