AOC K – Water Well

|
|
The water well is located next to a tree northeast
of the barracks at the Public Works complex at NASD. It was used from
approximately 1941 to 1979 as a potable water supply well. The well was later
plugged and abandoned.
The USGS performed a study of 14 water wells in
the NASD area in 1996, including the well at AOC K. The report indicated that
among the reconditioned wells, only one well (AOC K) contained CERCLA hazardous
compounds. Benzene was reported at a concentration of 21 micrograms per liter
(µg/L), which is above the Federal maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 5 µg/L.
The Phase II Expanded PA/SI
field investigation at AOC K included the installation and sampling of two
groundwater monitoring wells upgradient and three monitoring wells downgradient
of the former water supply well. Iron and thallium detected in the groundwater
were determined to be associated with background levels in the soil and not
related to the former water supply well site. Health hazard effects are within
acceptable limits for an industrial worker. No benzene was detected in any of
the wells installed for the PA/SI. Therefore, the site was recommended for NFA.
