AOC E - Former UST Site 2016
AOC E is located within the former public works area on West Vieques. The former
550-gallon underground storage tank (UST) was installed in 1970
to store waste oil generated from vehicle maintenance activities at Building
2016. The tank and piping were removed in 1996. A Multi-phase Vacuum Extraction
(MPE) Pilot Study at AOC E in 2002 removed fuel-related chemicals from the
groundwater, but a small amount of free phase petroleum product remained. A
second Pilot Study began in January 2010 that that includes in situ
chemical oxidation injection followed by enhanced in situ bioremediation
for groundwater contaminants and nitrate injection for soil contaminants that
may pose a continuing concern for leaching into groundwater.
