Overview of SARA
In October 1986, Congress passed the Superfund
Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), which made changes to
CERCLA. An important provision of SARA included federal
facilities in the Superfund process. The Department of Defense
set up the Defense Environmental Restoration Account (DERA) to fund
studies and cleanups at military installations.
